What are the causes and risk factors of insulin resistance?

  • Excess body fat especially visceral
  • High blood sugar
  • High levels of fat in triglycerides released from abdominal fat
  • Steroids (e.g. prednisone)
  • Glucosamine supplements
  • Excess insulin production or injection
  • Certain medications including some diabetes, cholesterol, birth control and thyroid medications
  • High levels of stress which causes the release of the hormone epinephrine
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Infection
  • Dehydration
