  • Finding and treating diabetes early can prevent health problems later on. Many people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms and do not know they have diabetes. Some people are at higher risk for diabetes than others. People at high risk include those who:

    • are older than 45
    • are overweight
    • have a close family member such as a parent, a brother, or a sister who has or had diabetes
    • had diabetes during pregnancy
    • had a baby that weight more than 9 pounds
    • are African American, Hispanic or Latino, Asian American or Pacific Islander, or Native American
    • have high blood pressure
    • have high cholesterol or other abnormal blood fats
    • are inactive

Hey amontemayor! Good question.  The best thing to do is if you are expiencing any of the symptoms shown to make an appointment with your doctor.  I know that I've tested a few friends blood sugars (BG's) recently, and they were quite high - and I did tell them to go an speak to their doctor. The only problem I do find is that not all doctors are up on all things "diabetic" - so if you still question whatever they say to you and are experiencing symptoms - I would advise you try to see an endocrinlogist (you may need a referral).  I'm not a medical experiment, but just saying that this is what I would do for myself.  It's of course entirely up to you as an individual how you approach the management of your health.

I know because of the growing concern of diabetes becoming an epidemic - that places like IDF (International Diabetes Federation) is trying to get the medical field more educated in diabetic awareness.

Hope this helps answer your question.

What tests do I need in order to test if I have diabetes?

You have some good points there Sing18 - and here's a few other factors that could point to having Type 2 diabetes:

    • You are often thirsty
    • You go to the bathroom alot (urinate)
    • You lose weight without knowing why
    • You do not have much energy
    • You can't see well (blurred vision)
    • You get more infections than usual
    • You have cuts and cruises that heal slowly
    • You feel tingling or numbness in your hands and/or feet

It is important to know if you have diabetes. The sooner you know, the sooner you can take steps to help you live well with diabetes.  People with diabetes can live long, healthy, happy lives (I'm living proof of it myself ).
