Banting and Best discovered the juice of life for keeping us diabetics alive and kicking back in the 1920's and now a possiblility of another insulin is coming into reality. A group of pioneering Canadian scientists at the University of Calgary is working on a way to make a much cheaper form of insulin using an easily grown plant: the safflower.
As we all know, insulin is not cheap to manufacture. Their hope is to produce an insulin that is more affordable, and with that in mind, enable people to continue on with their insulin injections to stay healthy! By inserting a human insulin gene into the plant, then grinding the seeds, extracting the oil, it then can be harvested into insulin!
They have entered into Phase 2 of the study and it's been found to be safe for human use. Phase 3 will be starting up next year when they will discover if it will work in diabetics. Again, sign me up as a guinea pig, I'll help out in the research area!
